Saved views

A saved view is a shortcut in the sidebar to a screen with filters applied: “Car”, “House”, “Trip to Lisbon”. One click instead of rebuilding the filter every time.

Saving a view

1. Go to the screen you want — any report or the Journal — and add the filters.
2. Click Save as View… in the filter bar, or press ⌃⌘S (View ▸ Save as View…). It is only available while a filter is active.
3. In the sheet:
   • Name: starts with the value of your first filter; change it to whatever you like.
   • Icon: pick one of the sixteen (star, car, house, airplane, cart, fork and knife, heart, briefcase, gift, runner, paw, graduation cap, first-aid case, bolt, credit card, tag).
   • Also remember the period: see below.
4. Save. The view appears in a Views section of the sidebar, between Reports and Ledger.

The sheet’s second line reminds you what is being saved, for example Income Statement · #lisbon-2026, not Expenses:Gifts.

With or without the period

This one checkbox decides how the view behaves:

• Unticked (the default): opening the view keeps whatever period you are looking at. Right for ongoing subjects — “Car” should show this month when you are looking at this month, and last year when you are looking at last year.
• Ticked: opening the view always goes to the saved period. Right for things with a date — a trip, a renovation, a tax year. If the period was a moving preset such as This Year, it keeps moving.

Using a view

Click it in the sidebar. The app switches to its screen, applies its filters (and its period, if it has one). The window title becomes the view’s name, and the subtitle says which screen and period you are looking at. Hovering over the view in the sidebar shows its screen and filters.

A view is a starting point, not a lock: once open, you can add or remove filters, flip them, change the period or the chart. None of that changes the saved view.

Changing a view

Right-click it in the sidebar:

Item	What it does
Rename…	Changes the name.
Update with Current Filters	Overwrites the view’s filters with the ones active now. Open the view, adjust the filters, then choose this.
Delete	Removes the view. Your ledger is not touched.

Where views are kept

Views belong to the ledger they were created in (they are stored in the app’s preferences, keyed by the path of the main file). They are not written into your .beancount files. If you move or rename the main file, its views stay behind with the old path.
